Anthropic has launched its latest AI model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, which the company describes as a “hybrid AI reasoning model.”

The San Francisco-based startup, led by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, says the model can generate instant responses while also engaging in more complex, deliberate reasoning when given additional time, Fortune’s Data Sheet reported.

Anthropic calls this capability “extended thinking,” explaining in a blog post that it doesn’t involve switching to a separate model but rather allows the same model to allocate more time and effort to generate an answer.

The company positions Claude 3.7 Sonnet as a competitor to DeepSeek’s R1, Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking, xAI’s Grok 3, and OpenAI’s o3-mini.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that his company is scrapping the o3 model release in favor of a streamlined GPT-5, which will consolidate multiple capabilities and allow paying subscribers to access increasingly advanced intelligence levels.

In AI terminology, “reasoning” refers to breaking down complex queries into simpler steps—a process that differs from human critical thinking, which involves questioning and challenging information itself.

With Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Anthropic aims to simplify and integrate features that its competitors typically distribute across multiple models. The model is available to all users and developers, but only premium subscribers can access its full reasoning capabilities.
