Canada is preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on American orange juice, toilets, and certain steel products if Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian goods.
Canada announced billions in new duties against the US in response to tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
This was reported by a senior official familiar with the matter , Rob Gillies of the Associated Press (AP) wrote.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the wide-ranging list of retaliatory measures has not yet been finalized. Trump has recently suggested using economic coercion to pressure Canada into becoming the 51st state, a claim that outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed as a distraction.
“President Trump, who is a very skillful negotiator, is getting people to be somewhat distracted by that conversation,” Trudeau said.
“Everything American consumers buy from Canada is suddenly going to get a lot more expensive if he moves forward on these tariffs. And that’s something we need to be focusing on a little bit more.”
When Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term, other nations, including Canada, responded with their own retaliatory tariffs. In 2018, Canada announced billions in new duties against the US in response to tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
Among the products targeted were yogurt imports from Wisconsin and whiskey from Kentucky, home states of prominent Republican leaders Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell, respectively.
Nearly 25% of US oil consumption comes from Canada, contradicting Trump’s claim that the US does not need Canadian resources.
