Samsung has also delayed placing orders with other suppliers for the $17 billion factory in Taylor, prompting some suppliers to seek other customers and recall staff deployed on-site, three additional sources said.
The delay in equipment deliveries marks another setback for the Taylor project, which is central to Samsung chairman Jay Y. Lee's goal of expanding beyond its core memory chip business into contract chip manufacturing—a sector dominated by Taiwan's TSMC.
The delay highlights the growing gap between Samsung and its rivals, such as TSMC and SK Hynix, which are ramping up production of high-end chips to meet the booming demand from artificial intelligence applications.
ASML, the world’s largest chipmaking equipment supplier, recently cut its 2025 sales forecast, citing weakness in markets beyond AI and delayed fabs. The Dutch company did not name specific clients who have delayed their fabs.
