The Associated Press (AP) reported that this marks Sweden's first deployment of armed forces as a NATO member, following its accession to the alliance in March 2025.
The Swedish military will also deploy an ASC 890 surveillance aircraft, and the Coast Guard will provide four ships for monitoring, with seven additional vessels on standby. These moves come amid heightened concerns about Russian activity in the Baltic region.
Since 2023, at least ten undersea cables and pipelines have been damaged, impacting Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Lithuania.
Some incidents have been attributed to ships dragging their anchors. These infrastructure links are critical for trade and energy security and help reduce reliance on Russian energy sources.
