World Population To Reach 8.09 Billion On New Year’s Day After 71 Million Increase In 2024

The world population grew by more than 71 million people in 2024, reaching an estimated 8.09 billion people on New Year’s Day, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released recently, Mike Schneider reported for the Associated Press (AP).


The 0.9% population increase in 2024 marks a slight slowdown from 2023, which saw a growth of 75 million people.

The U.S. population grew by 2.6 million people in 2024, bringing the total to 341 million people on New Year’s Day.


In January 2025, the U.S. was projected to have one birth every 9 seconds and one death every 9.4 seconds. International migration was expected to add one person to the population every 23.2 seconds, resulting in a net population increase of one person every 21.2 seconds.



Since the start of the 2020s, the U.S. population has grown by nearly 9.7 million people, reflecting a 2.9% growth rate. In contrast, the U.S. population grew by 7.4% during the 2010s, the lowest growth rate since the 1930s.
