Discovery Of 8,600-Year-Old Bread In Turkey

Archaeologists in Turkey have unearthed the world's oldest known bread, dating back to 6600 BC, according to a report by Amarachi Orie and Gul Tuysuz for CNN.

The discovery was made at the archaeological site of Çatalhöyük in the southern Turkish province of Konya. Archaeologists found the remnants of a largely destroyed oven structure in an area called "Mekan 66," along with wheat, barley, pea seeds, and a palm-sized, round, spongy residue.

Dr. Ali Umut Türkcan, head of the Excavation Delegation and an associate professor at Anadolu University in Turkey, described the find as significant given its age.
