E. Jean Carroll Finally Receives $5.6 Million in Damages

American journalist and writer E. Jean Carroll has gained access to $5.6 million in damages awarded in her civil case against President Donald Trump after lawyers for both sides agreed that an injunction sought by Trump is moot, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Carroll's legal battle with Trump began after she accused him of sexually assaulting her in a New York department store in the 1990s.

A jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation in 2023 and awarded Carroll $5 million. That award was later upheld on appeal.

In late June, the US Supreme Court rejected what had been considered Trump's final appeal concerning that judgment. The $5.6 million in damages, which had been deposited by Trump, could consequently be released to Carroll.

Trump subsequently sought to prevent Carroll from receiving the money while he pursued further legal action.

Carroll told AFP that the lawyers for both sides had since agreed that the injunction was moot.

Carroll also has a separate, substantially larger award of $83.3 million stemming from another defamation case against Trump. That separate award remains subject to legal proceedings.
