Empowering The Unbanked

Updated: Aug 26

Huawei, a global telecommunications giant with a controversial reputation, has announced a partnership with UnionDigital Bank to enhance cloud-based financial services for the unbanked population in the Philippines.

UnionDigital Bank has joined forces with Huawei and Chinese fintech firm Sunline to launch an innovative cloud-based core banking platform. This partnership comes at a time when Huawei continues to face scrutiny due to concerns about national security and its close ties to the Chinese government. | Photos: Huawei

In collaboration with Sunline, a Chinese financial technology firm, Huawei has enabled UnionDigital Bank to build a next-generation core platform designed to expedite loan applications, processing, and servicing.

This rapid deployment marks a significant step towards financial inclusion in a country where millions lack access to traditional banking services.

UnionDigital Bank, one of the first digital banks in the Philippines, aims to serve underserved communities by providing easy access to essential financial services.

The new platform, completed in just 35 days, showcases a significant technological feat. It demonstrates how financial technology can help bridge the gap for individuals who are often excluded from traditional banking systems.

As Ron Puno, UnionDigital's Chief Technology and Transformation Officer, explained, "One of the things that they really need is financial assistance. How do we extend loans out to them in a faraway area very quickly? The only way to do that, we think, is through digital means."

However, the collaboration with Huawei may raise concerns due to the company’s controversial reputation.

Huawei has faced significant scrutiny in the United States and Europe over potential security risks, with allegations that its technology could be used for espionage.

In 2019, Huawei was added to the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security Entity List, effectively banning the use of its technology in U.S. communications networks.

These concerns have not been entirely alleviated, even under the current Biden administration.

Despite these concerns, the impact of the partnership is undeniable. With digital payment becoming more common in the Philippines, UnionDigital’s initiative stands to revolutionize how financial services are delivered.

The new cloud-based platform can handle large volumes of loan applications daily, opening up new financial avenues for many previously excluded Filipinos.

As this digital banking initiative gains traction, it has the potential to transform the banking landscape in the Philippines, offering a model that could be replicated in other regions with similar challenges.

Looking forward, Huawei, strengthened by this experience, intends to continue its collaboration with Sunline and other partners to drive digital finance innovations globally.

While the partnership raises significant security concerns, it also highlights the transformative power of digital technology in addressing critical financial inclusion issues.

For millions of unbanked Filipinos, this partnership opens doors to new opportunities and a path towards economic empowerment.
