The latest Russian attacks on Sumy and Kryvyi Rih show Vladimir Putin has no intention of engaging in peace talks, European Union foreign ministers said, Jorge Liboreiro reported for Euronews.

The ministers called for tightening sanctions on Russia following a devastating strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy. The attack saw two Russian ballistic missiles hit the city center while Christians celebrated the religious holiday.

At least 34 people were killed and more than 110 injured.

“Only filthy scum can act like this,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

The assault followed another tragedy in Kryvyi Rih earlier this month, where 19 people, including nine children, were killed. Both attacks reportedly used a combination of ballistic missiles and cluster munitions to maximize civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.

“I just want to say how appalled I am by the latest spate of Russian attacks on Ukraine,” said Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s foreign minister.

“I hope President Trump and the U.S. administration see that the leader of Russia is mocking that goodwill, and I hope the right decisions are taken.”

Lithuania’s national security advisor, Kęstutis Budrys, called the Sumy strike a “war crime by definition” and urged the EU to target previously untouched sectors such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and nuclear power with a new round of sanctions.
