The 27-nation European Union (EU) bloc is preparing an initial set of countermeasures in response to President Trump's “Liberation Day” tariffs, which are set to take effect on April 9.

Under the policy, the EU faces a 20% tariff rate, impacting approximately 70% of the bloc's exports to the United States. Speaking at an event, Elon Musk commented, “Europe and the United States should move, ideally, in my view, to a zero-tariff situation.”
Last week, President Trump announced a blanket 10% tariff on all goods entering the U.S., along with new duties targeting products from 185 countries—nations he referred to as the “worst offenders” in what he sees as unfair trade practices.

Some countries have introduced retaliatory tariffs: Canada announced new duties on certain U.S. vehicle imports, and China declared that it will implement countermeasures starting April 10, including a 34% tariff on U.S. goods.
Meanwhile, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Singapore have stated they will not impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products.
