EU Ready to Counter Trump Tariffs, Says Senior Trade Lawmaker

The European Union (EU) is prepared to respond to potential U.S. tariffs under President-elect Donald Trump, including his proposed 10% levy on EU goods, German socialist MEP Bernd Lange said in an interview with Radio Schuman.

Concerns are growing in Brussels about Trump’s nomination of Howard Lutnick as the next U.S. Commerce Secretary, signaling a potentially contentious trade environment.

The comments were reported by Maïa de La Baume and Eleonora Vasques for Euronews.

Lange, who chairs the European Parliament’s trade committee, outlined possible retaliatory measures, drawing on the bloc’s experience countering similar U.S. trade policies during Trump’s first presidency in 2018.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also suggested replacing Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports with U.S. LNG as part of efforts to mitigate economic risks.

However, concerns are growing in Brussels about Trump’s nomination of Howard Lutnick as the next U.S. Commerce Secretary, signaling a potentially contentious trade environment.
