China has been revealed to have created thousands of fake social media accounts designed to appear as if they were from Americans.

The accounts utilized fake photos, names, and locations to mimic everyday American Facebook users expressing their opinions on political issues.

These accounts were used to disseminate polarizing political content, seemingly in an effort to divide the US ahead of next year's elections, as reported by David Klepper for the Associated Press (AP).

The network, comprising nearly 4,800 fake accounts, was attempting to build an audience when it was identified and eliminated by Meta, the tech company that owns Facebook and Instagram.

The accounts utilized fake photos, names, and locations to mimic everyday American Facebook users expressing their opinions on political issues.

Instead of generating fake content, as other networks have done, these accounts were employed to reshare posts from X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. These posts were originally created by politicians, news outlets, and other entities.

The interconnected accounts pulled content from both liberal and conservative sources, indicating that their goal was not to support one side or the other but to exaggerate partisan divisions and further inflame polarization.

The newly identified network highlights how adversaries exploit US-based tech platforms to sow discord and distrust.

It also underscores the significant threats posed by online disinformation, especially in the context of the upcoming national elections in the US, India, Mexico, Ukraine, Pakistan, Taiwan, and other nations.
