According to KDDI, the failure occurred at 7:18 a.m. the same day, affecting the company's brands au and UQ Mobile, among others.
Mobile phone connections were reportedly difficult in the Kansai, Hokuriku, Sanin, Sanyo, Shikoku, and Kyushu regions, among other areas.
The cause is under investigation, KDDI said, as it deployed its engineers to track down where the glitch occurred and how it affected much of heavily populated western Japan regions.
