GOP Wins House Majority

Republicans have secured a majority in the House of Representatives, completing their control over both chambers of Congress and the White House.

The GOP's right wing is now empowered by Trump’s election victory.

The GOP had already gained control of the Senate last week, Stephen Groves and Lisa Mascaro reported for The Associated Press (AP).

The previous two years of Republican House control were marked by internal conflicts as hardline conservative factions sought to gain influence by challenging party leadership. Although House Speaker Mike Johnson, sometimes with Trump’s support, largely kept rebellions in check, the party's right wing is now empowered by Trump’s election victory.

The Republican majority also includes a small group of lawmakers who won tough races by campaigning as moderates. It remains to be seen whether they will support Trump’s more extreme proposals.

Meanwhile, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries aims to keep Democrats relevant in legislative efforts, unifying over 200 members as the party reflects on its election losses.
