Walz, a former high school teacher, coach, and veteran, brings Midwestern appeal and experience to the ticket, which many Democrats believe could be politically advantageous.
Harris, who highlighted Walz’s deep commitment to middle-class families, expressed her enthusiasm about the choice.
"One of the things that stood out to me about Tim is how his convictions on fighting for middle class families run deep. It’s personal," Harris said in a statement. "As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his own. We are going to build a great partnership. We start out as underdogs but I believe together, we can win this election."
Walz, 60, said being chosen was “the honor of a lifetime.” The selection of Walz, who is White and represents a competitive state, is seen as a strategic move to broaden the ticket's appeal across the country.
Harris, 59, who is Black and Indian American, spent much of her career in California, a Democratic stronghold. The choice of Walz reflects a balance of experience and regional diversity that the campaign hopes will resonate with voters.
