The rental car giant said an investigation completed on April 2 revealed that the breach affected some customers’ birthdates, credit card details, driver’s license numbers, and information related to workers’ compensation claims, J.J. McCorvey reported for NBC News.
The company added that the Social Security numbers, passport details, and Medicare or Medicaid IDs of “a very small number of individuals” may also have been exposed. Hertz did not specify how many customers were affected.
The breach occurred in two waves, in October and December 2024, and was traced to unauthorized access through systems operated by Cleo Communications, one of the company’s software vendors.
“Hertz takes the privacy and security of personal information seriously,” the company said in a statement.
It has reported the incident to law enforcement, notified relevant regulators, and is offering two years of free identity-monitoring services to affected customers. Austin Mullen also reported for NBC News.
