Science usually advances in small steps. Each new experiment adds a small scrap of information. It’s rare for a simple idea that arises in a scientist’s brain, without the use of any technology, to lead to a significant breakthrough.

But that’s what happened to two Israeli engineers who developed a new way to make optical lenses. Prof. Moran Bercovici and Dr. Valeri Frumkin developed cheap technology for making optic lenses, with the potential to produce glasses for developing nations where many have no access to them, Gid’on Levy reported for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the US also noted that the technology developed by Bercovici and Frumkin could be used to make space telescopes, thus providing the agency with less expensive material for use in peering into the deepest recesses of the universe.
Yet, the most important contribution of the technology is its capacity to provide inexpensive lenses for about 2.5 billion poor people who need them. This makes the technology being applied at the Technion lab in Israel to produce lenses a significant breakthrough for humanity.
