Measured by the value of goods or services a worker can produce per hour, labor productivity in Japan totaled $52.30, marking a two-spot decline from the previous year and a new lowest-ever position, as per the Japan Productivity Center.
This result represented the fourth consecutive year of Japan's descent in the rankings since placing 21st in 2018.
However, the report released in December showed a slight 0.8% increase in productivity calculation from the previous year.
Compared to 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, Japan's productivity expanded by 2.0% in 2022, though it still lagged behind other nations with more significant advances. In the 2022 rankings, Ireland claimed the top spot with $154.10 in value per person per hour, followed by Norway at $149.90.
The average among the OECD members was $65.20, with the US ranking ninth at $89.80 and Germany 11th at $87.20 among the G7 nations.
