The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has approved a provisional jeepney fare increase nationwide. This increase is scheduled to take effect on October 8, 2023.
The transport groups behind the fare hike petition have cited rising petroleum prices as the reason for their request.
Under this provisional increase, the minimum fare for traditional jeepneys will be ₱13, and for modern ones, it will be ₱15 pesos.
It's important to note that this provisional increase is temporary and subject to further review. The main petition for a fare increase, which is still under consideration by the LTFRB, seeks a ₱5 fare hike for the first four kilometers and ₱1 per kilometer thereafter.
The transport groups behind the fare hike petition have cited rising petroleum prices as the reason for their request. However, it's unclear what the final decision on the fare increase will be after hearings and negotiations.
Taxi drivers and operators are also seeking a ₱30 hike in their flag-down rate due to the continuous increase in fuel prices.
Transport group PISTON has proposed an alternative solution, suggesting that the government scrap the Oil Deregulation Law while suspending the excise tax and value-added tax on oil as a way to alleviate the financial burden on the commuting public.
Please note that fare adjustments are subject to government approval and may change as the situation evolves.
