The ride-hailing company is partnering with Japan’s Marubeni, which manages nearly one million vehicles worldwide and has collaborated with Mobileye in Japan. However, Lyft has not yet disclosed which automaker will supply vehicles for its Dallas robo-taxi fleet.
The move comes as competition for Texas heats up.
Uber recently opened a waitlist for Waymo robotaxis in Austin, just 200 miles south of Dallas. The company had announced plans to expand to Austin and Atlanta in September 2024.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk told Tesla investors in January that his electric car company plans to launch an unsupervised, fully autonomous robo-taxi service in Austin by June 2025.
“We feel confident in being able to do an initial launch of unsupervised, no one in the car, full self-driving in Austin in June,” he said. However, Musk has a history of product launch delays.
