French President Emmanuel Macron criticized Elon Musk on Monday for allegedly supporting far-right ideologies and meddling in European politics, Julia Conley reported for Common Dreams.
"Supporting a new international reactionary movement and intervening directly in elections shows an alarming sense of entitlement," Macron said. I Photo: Emmanuel Macron Facebook
Speaking in Paris, Macron expressed disbelief over Musk’s influence, particularly in Germany, where the Tesla CEO and owner of the social media platform X openly backed the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
"Supporting a new international reactionary movement and intervening directly in elections shows an alarming sense of entitlement," Macron said.
Musk recently wrote an op-ed in Germany’s Welt am Sonntag, claiming his investments in the country gave him the right to comment on its political trajectory.
The AfD, which promotes anti-immigration policies and has been designated an extremist organization by German domestic intelligence, has faced widespread criticism for its far-right stances, including a candidate’s defense of Nazi paramilitaries.
German Social Democratic Party leader Lars Klingbeil compared Musk to Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing both of trying to destabilize democracies. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also criticized Musk, saying, "Spreading lies and misinformation harms victims and democracy alike."
Ed Davey, leader of the UK’s Liberal Democrats, added, "People have had enough of Elon Musk interfering in our democracy."
Musk, meanwhile, called for the removal of UK Reform Party chief Nigel Farage, whom he labeled a "fascist and apartheid backer."
