President Trump has nominated Rep. Matt Gaetz as the next US Attorney General, a move that former Labor Secretary Robert Reich criticized as both “horrific and dangerous,” according to his newsletter.

Reich warned that Gaetz’s appointment would likely enable Trump to weaponize the Justice Department against his adversaries.
Since Trump’s initial indictments, Gaetz has defended him, claiming the prosecutions were politically motivated, accusing Joe Biden of involvement, and suggesting that Trump has the right to retaliate against political opponents.
Two prominent Republican moderates, Senator Susan Collins and Senator Lisa Murkowski, have already voiced opposition to Gaetz's nomination.
Collins said she was “shocked” by the choice, while Murkowski dismissed him as an unserious candidate.
Reich, who served in the Justice Department after Richard Nixon’s attempt to misuse it against his opponents, noted that President Gerald Ford appointed Edward Levi as Attorney General to restore public trust.
In contrast, Gaetz, a 42-year-old Florida congressman, lacks the experience for the role, having neither served as a government attorney nor as a judge. Reich likened Gaetz's nomination to choosing Vladimir Putin for Secretary of Defense.
