This is another feather in the cap of Megawide, known for its precedent-setting innovations in its construction projects as it was cited for its Plumera project in Mactan, Cebu for the use of innovative engineering technologies in the said project.

Megawide bagged the Mid-Rise Category for excellence in this year’s Philippine Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards (PECCA) for its construction of the Plumera Mactan project, a development by Cebuano company Johndorf Ventures.

PECCA is organized by the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA) and the American Concrete Institute Philippines (ACIP). The award recognizes projects with outstanding use of innovation and technology, and for inspiring excellence throughout the global concrete design and construction community.

Last year, Megawide also won in two PECCA categories: Best Infrastructure, for Mactan- Cebu International Airport Terminal 2, dubbed the Country’s Friendliest Resort-Airport; and Decorative Concrete, for Paranaque Integrated Terminal Exchange, known as the Philippines’ First Landport.

The use of precast elements, such as walls, slabs, and stairs can reduce time and manpower requirements. Precast slabs were used for the stairs and bathrooms which were produced in controlled factory environments.

“We are grateful to PECCA for recognizing excellence in concrete technology. The award shows that the Philippine construction industry is committed to the development and application of world-class standards in their projects, including the affordable housing segment,” said Frederick Tan, Megawide Chief Operating Officer for Construction.

“The usual thinking is that affordable housing sacrifices quality for price. That should not be the case. We can look towards innovative technologies and methodologies such as precast to deliver value for money without sacrificing the quality,” he continued.

Faster construction with the use of precast technology is seen to address the country’s estimated total housing backlog of 5.7 million for 2011-2016, which will require the construction of 2,600 homes per day in the next six years.
