The two companies formalized their collaboration with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) during the Philippines-Korea Business Forum, coinciding with the recent state visit of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to Manila.
Leading the ceremonial signing were Meralco Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan and Doosan Vice Chairman and COO Yeonin Jung.
"This partnership marks a significant milestone in advancing energy innovation and sustainability in the Philippines," said Doosan’s Yeonin Jung. "By collaborating on transformative projects, we aim to modernize the country's energy infrastructure and ensure a stable, long-term supply of clean and reliable power."
Meralco Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Meralco's role in supporting the Philippine government’s energy security goals.
"Partnering with dependable companies like Doosan aligns with our commitment to explore innovative energy solutions that ensure sufficient, affordable, and reliable power for the Philippines," he stated.
The partnership underscores both companies' commitment to exploring innovative solutions that align with their shared goals of advancing low-carbon energy initiatives. Key areas of focus include the potential deployment of nuclear power facilities in the Philippines, particularly the rehabilitation of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP).
The two companies are also studying the use of small modular reactors (SMRs) to help meet the country’s growing power demand and enhance long-term energy security.
In addition to nuclear power, Meralco and Doosan are working on reducing carbon emissions from aging thermal power plants through the possible deployment of greenhouse gas reduction technologies, such as ammonia co-firing.
Furthermore, the partnership will explore the development of gas turbines for combined cycle power projects, with Doosan serving as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor.
As the Philippines seeks to address its energy challenges, this collaboration between Meralco and Doosan reinforces both nations' commitment to sustainable development and energy security.
Through initiatives such as these, Meralco remains at the forefront of nation-building, tackling the country's energy needs with forward-thinking partnerships and projects.
