Mexico's La Jornada newspaper called on Friday (Saturday, July 25, 2020 in Manila) to grant the Nobel Peace Prize to the Henry Reeve Cuban medical brigades for their international performance fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an extensive article signed by Gilberto Lopez y Rivas, the daily cited the Cuban medical brigades for their work on the global health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with millions of people infected, deceased and confined, and its exponential effects in worsening the multifactorial crisis of the capitalist system.
The Latin American Prensa Latina reported that Lopez y Rivas stressed the fact that Cuba, a small island in the Caribbean Sea blockaded for more than 60 years by the United States, has deployed 40 solidarity medical brigades to fight the pandemic in 34 countries, which sparked affection and admiration from the people they treated and worked with.
According to the Cuban Central Medical Cooperation Unit, these brigades joined 28,729 other health collaborators who were already providing their services in 59 nations. Videos showing the arrival of the brigades in white coats to the airports, raising the Cuban flag in front of the contingent, or bidding emotional farewells in public squares, have gone viral worldwide.
