MUFG Bank has terminated an employee for allegedly stealing between ¥1 billion ($6 million) and ¥2 billion worth of assets from the safe deposit boxes of approximately 60 customers in Tokyo, Mainichi Japan reported.

The employee was dismissed on Nov. 14 after admitting to the thefts, which occurred at the Nerima and Tamagawa branches between April 2020 and October 2024. The bank is investigating the matter and working with police to resolve the case.
The thefts were uncovered on Oct. 31 when the bank received an inquiry from a customer.
MUFG confirmed that emergency assessments conducted across other branches found no similar incidents.
“The former employee, who was responsible for managing the safe deposit boxes, exploited their position to open customers’ safes without authorization and steal their assets,” MUFG Bank stated. The exact value of the stolen items remains under investigation.
