Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw was fired for cause by the railroad’s board for “engaging in a consensual relationship with the company’s chief legal officer,” who was also terminated, the railroad announced, Chris Isidore reported for CNN.

A statement from the company said Shaw had been dismissed “for cause,” which could prevent him from receiving the type of exit package often awarded to CEOs upon termination.
The company first disclosed that Shaw was under investigation on Sunday. Shaw had been CEO of one of the nation’s four largest freight railroads for just over two years and had recently survived a shareholder vote that sought his removal.
The company also announced that Nabanita Nag had been terminated from her roles as Executive Vice President for Corporate Affairs, Chief Legal Officer, and Corporate Secretary, effective immediately, in connection with the preliminary findings of the board’s ongoing investigation.
Norfolk Southern has appointed CFO Mark George as the company’s new CEO.
“The Board has full confidence in Mark and his ability to continue delivering on our commitments to shareholders and other stakeholders,” said Claude Mongeau, chairman of Norfolk Southern’s board.
