One of the largest solar projects in the US has opened in Texas, backed by what Google described as the largest solar electricity purchase it has ever made, Jennifer McDermott reported for the Associated Press (AP).

Google executive Ben Sloss stated at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, held about two hours south of Dallas, that the company has a responsibility to bring renewable, carbon-free electricity online as it opens operations that will utilize that power.

He mentioned that Google plans to invest $16 billion globally through 2040 in purchasing clean energy.

US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, who attended the event, called the solar project a model for the administration’s efforts to incentivize manufacturers and developers to establish energy projects in the US.

“Sometimes when you are in the middle of history, it’s hard to tell because you are in the middle of it,” she said. “But I’m telling you right now that we are in the middle of history being made.”
