The 26-year-old AI expert had raised concerns earlier this year about alleged copyright law violations by OpenAI, Maxwell Zeff reported for TechCrunch.
According to an OCME spokesperson, the death has been ruled a suicide. “The OCME has identified the decedent as Suchir Balaji, 26, of San Francisco. The next of kin has been notified, and we have no further comments or reports for publication at this time,” the spokesperson stated.
Balaji worked at OpenAI for nearly four years before resigning, citing concerns that the technology could harm society.
In an October interview with The New York Times, Balaji criticized OpenAI for its alleged misuse of copyright data, asserting that its practices were damaging to the internet.
“We are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news today,” an OpenAI spokesperson said in an email to TechCrunch. “Our hearts go out to Suchir’s loved ones during this difficult time.”
