The Philippines has been named the World’s Leading Dive Destination for the sixth time by the 2024 World Travel Awards (WTA), the Department of Tourism (DOT) announced.
Diving has become one of the Philippines’ premier tourism products, generating significant revenue for the industry.
In addition to this recognition, the WTA honored Boracay as the World’s Leading Luxury Island Destination, Manila as the World’s Leading City Destination, and Amanpulo as the World’s Leading Dive Resort.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco highlighted the country’s commitment to sustainable dive tourism during the Philippine Dive Experience launch in Anilao.
“The Philippines holds the distinct privilege of being one of only 18 mega biodiverse countries in the world. We find ourselves at the center of marine biodiversity, which underscores the importance of prioritizing conservation and fostering a sustainable diving industry. If we fail to do so, we risk losing these marine wonders and depriving future generations of sources of income and livelihood,” Frasco said.
“This is why we have been consistent and aggressive in supporting the diving industry from all pillars of development,” she added.
The WTA awarding ceremony was held in the Atlantic islands of Madeira on November 24, marking the culmination of the WTA’s search for the world’s best destinations and travel organizations for the year.
The WTA also named the DOT as the World’s Leading Tourist Board, and City of Dreams Manila was recognized as the World’s Leading Casino Resort.
In 2023, the Philippines similarly won the title of World’s Leading Dive Destination, along with distinctions as the World’s Leading Beach Destination and World’s Leading City Destination for Manila.
Diving has become one of the Philippines’ premier tourism products, generating significant revenue for the industry. In 2023 alone, it brought in ₱73 billion, showcasing its vital role in driving sustainable economic growth and enhancing the livelihood of countless Filipinos.
