Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency, activated the National Guard, and urged President Biden to issue an emergency declaration, Meryl Kornfield, Maria Luisa Paul, Jason Samenow, Andrew Jeong and Amy Cheng reported for the New York Times and said at least six were killed and more fatalities are expected.
“It is reported that a Graves County [candle] factory has collapsed, trapping workers and we believe there are at least 50 fatalities,” Beshear wrote in a request for emergency disaster relief, which he then tweeted out.
“One tornado, which originated in Arkansas and traversed over 200 miles in Kentucky, is being recognized by the National Weather Service to be one of the longest in history,” the governor told Boston Globe.
The storms included a twister that tore through parts of four states, trapping dozens of other people and toppling numerous structures. The roof of an Amazon warehouse in Illinois also collapsed, killing dozens of people.
