Regulators have declined requests from fishermen to increase the quota on baby eels, also known as elvers, harvested in Maine, as reported by Patrick Whittle for the Associated Press (AP).

Maine's elver fishery, which yields one of the most valuable marine species in the US, sought an increase in the quota for the upcoming year.
However, regulators have indicated that the tight restrictions in place for several years are likely to remain unchanged. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is considering maintaining the quota at its current level of nearly 10,000 pounds, amid pressure from both fishermen advocating for an increase and environmentalists advocating for a reduction.
