Russia has dismissed a senior military commander for allegedly making false claims about the progress of its war effort in eastern Ukraine, according to military bloggers and Russian media reports.

Col. Gen. Gennady Anashkin, commander of the South Forces Group, was removed from his position after providing misleading information regarding Russia’s advancements near the Siversk settlement in Donetsk, Billy Stockwell and Darya Tarasova reported for CNN.

Russian news outlet RBC, citing unnamed sources within the Ministry of Defense, reported that Anashkin’s removal was part of a planned rotation.

However, there has been no official confirmation from Russian authorities. Ukraine’s army chief has described the current Russian offensive on the frontlines as “one of the most powerful” since the war began.

Nevertheless, progress in some areas has been slower, with certain settlements becoming “synonymous with lies and unjustified losses,” according to Rybar, a prominent Russian military blog.

Rybar also claimed that misleading reports from commanders, including Anashkin, have contributed to significant Russian casualties.

“Only the lazy did not write about the problems there: in general, it took the system about two months to respond to it properly,” Rybar stated on Telegram, referring to unresolved issues in multiple frontline settlements.
