President Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Pam Bondi, was confirmed by the Senate in a 54-46 vote, The Hill's Hailey Fuchs reported.

A staunch Trump loyalist, Bondi will now assume the role of the nation’s top law enforcement officer. She is expected to play a key role in reshaping the Department of Justice (DOJ), which Trump has indicated he intends to use to pursue his political adversaries.

Bondi is not expected to honor previous commitments to refrain from using her office for political retribution.

While awaiting Senate confirmation, the new Trump administration, under acting Attorney General James McHenry, had already begun purging DOJ officials deemed "disloyal."

Prosecutors involved in cases related to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack and Trump’s role in inciting the riots have been dismissed.

“When confirmed, Ms. Bondi will take the helm at what we all know is a turbulent time—and at a Justice Department plagued by political decision-making, with its leaders refusing to acknowledge that reality,” Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said ahead of the vote.

Democrats, recognizing her confirmation was inevitable, instead used her hearing to question her stance on remarks made by another key Trump ally—FBI Director nominee Kash Patel.
