STEELASIA SETS BATANGAS PLANT CONSTRUCTION

The construction of SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp.'s Lemery plant in Batangas will resume after it was suspended due to the COVID-19 lockdown, according to a PNA report.

“The Lemery Works steel plant is of national significance as it will reduce our reliance on imports for important steel products needed for the government’s ambitious infrastructure program,” SteelAsia president Benjamin Yao said in a statement.

SteelAsia’s Lemery plant will be the country’s first steel beam manufacturing facility, with a capacity of producing 1.1 million tons of steel products annually.

The new facility will have two production lines, one for steelmaking and the other for steel section rolling.

The country’s largest steel manufacturer will be producing steel products used in infrastructure and heavy construction such as H-beam and I-beam steel, sheet piles, heavy angles, and channels.

Currently, the country only imports these steel products.

SteelAsia targets to commence the operation of the Lemery facility by 2023, generating 1,500 direct jobs.

The new plant will also recycle steel scrap for exports.

“When you export and process our resources abroad, it is creating jobs in another country. With this new plant, we will recycle our steel scrap here and generate local jobs,” Yao added.

SteelAsia has manufacturing facilities in Davao, Cebu, Misamis Oriental, Batangas, and Bulacan.

The steelmaker also has projects in Compostela in Cebu, Tarlac and Quezon.
