Altoona police detained the man, identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, at a McDonald’s around 9:15 a.m. Monday after he presented a fake New Jersey ID.
A subsequent search revealed a ghost gun, a suppressor, and clothing matching the description of what the suspect wore during the Dec. 4 killing in Manhattan. Police also recovered a handwritten document that Altoona police said may describe Mangione’s potential motive.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Mangione is considered "a strong person of interest" in the targeted, high-profile murder. Investigators believe the same fake ID was used to check into a Manhattan hostel before the crime.
Mangione, a 2016 valedictorian of the Gilman School in Baltimore, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020 with a dual bachelor's degree in computer engineering (BSE) and a master's in computer and information science (MSE).
