Toyota announced record sales of 11.2 million vehicles worldwide in 2023, including its Daihatsu and Hino lineups, representing a 7.2% increase compared to the previous year.
Volkswagen, in contrast, delivered 9.2 million vehicles in 2023, marking a 12% increase over 2022.
The competition between Toyota and Volkswagen for the top spot has been ongoing for years, with Toyota reclaiming its position in 2017 after Volkswagen briefly surpassed it in 2012.
Toyota attributed its growth to solid demand across regions and easing semiconductor shortages, with particularly strong sales in its home market of Japan.
