Norfolk Southern is seeking to have two other companies help cover the $600 million class-action settlement it agreed to pay over the catastrophic 2023 train derailment near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border, which resulted in the release and burning of toxic chemicals, Josh Funk reported for the Associated Press (AP).

The railroad has filed a motion aiming to compel railcar owner GATX and chemical manufacturer OxyVinyls to share in the cost. Norfolk Southern contends that these companies are partly responsible for the events that unfolded in East Palestine, Ohio, on February 3, 2023.
The outcome of this lawsuit will not affect the amount of money residents, the village, or other parties are set to receive, as those sums have already been established through various settlement agreements. Instead, the case will determine which company (or companies) will ultimately be responsible for paying the settlement.
