Trudeau Resigns As Canadian Prime Minister And Liberal Party Leader

After nearly a decade in power, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that he will step down following the selection of a new leader by the center-right Liberal Party, Eloise Goldsmith reported for Common Dreams.

Speaking in Ottawa, Trudeau said, "I care deeply about this country and will always prioritize what is in the best interest of Canadians. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, parliament has been paralyzed for months."

He also announced that the country's parliament will be suspended until the end of March to allow time for the leadership transition.

Trudeau’s resignation comes amid declining public approval, challenges posed by President-elect Donald Trump’s threat of 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, and the recent departure of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Freeland resigned in December after clashing with Trudeau over economic policies.

In her resignation letter, she emphasized the need for fiscal caution in the face of U.S. economic nationalism and criticized “costly political gimmicks” amid a cost-of-living crisis.

Trudeau's proposed policies had drawn criticism from across the political spectrum, intensifying calls for his resignation.
