President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Susie Wiles, the behind-the-scenes leader of his winning campaign, as his White House chief of staff, making her the first woman to hold this influential position, Zeke Miller, Michelle L. Price, and Jill Colvin reported for the Associated Press (AP).

Wiles is credited, both inside and outside Trump’s inner circle, for running his most disciplined and well-organized campaign yet, positioning her as the top candidate for the role.
Throughout the campaign, she largely stayed out of the public eye and even avoided speaking at Trump’s victory celebration.
She declined the formal campaign manager title, partly to sidestep the scrutiny that comes with it, given Trump’s history of turnover in that role.

Though Wiles has limited federal government experience, she has a strong rapport with Trump. During the campaign, she earned his respect and guided him to see the advantages of following her advice rather than ignoring it—a rare achievement among his advisers.
