His return to the White House for a second term marks a political comeback unprecedented in U.S. history. After being voted out of office, impeached, and convicted of 34 felonies, Trump now leads the nation again, Matthew Cullen reported for the Evening Briefing of the New York Times.

“The golden age of America begins right now,” Trump declared in his inaugural address.

“My recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal—many betrayals—and to restore the people’s faith, wealth, democracy, and freedom.”

Unlike previous presidents, Trump eschewed calls for unity, instead focusing on his personal journey and perceived destiny.

“One of the striking aspects of his speech was how much it was about him as much as it was about the country,” noted New York Times Chief White House Correspondent Peter Baker.

Trump claimed that God had “saved him from an assassin’s bullet” to fulfill his mission to save America.

Immediately after taking office, Trump began signing over 100 executive orders to reverse Biden administration policies and reshape the federal government to align with his agenda.

Among the first measures were declaring national emergencies at the southern border and in the energy sector, expediting permits for pipelines, and designating cartel organizations as global terrorists.

Trump also announced plans to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord, end support for electric vehicles, and study higher tariffs—a departure from his earlier promises to impose them immediately.

Other contentious proposals included ending birthright citizenship and seizing the Panama Canal, the latter apparently motivated by personal business grievances. Finally, Trump pledged to release records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
