Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau strongly criticized the high tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, calling them a "very dumb thing to do."

He also condemned Trump’s stance on Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, David O’Sullivan reported for Euronews.
“Today, the U.S. launched a trade war against Canada—their closest partner, ally, and friend. At the same time, they’re talking about working positively with Russia, appeasing Vladimir Putin, a lying, murderous dictator.
Make that make sense,” Trudeau said. "Now, it's not my habit to agree with The Wall Street Journal, but Donald, they pointed out that even though you're a smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do. The two of us fighting is exactly what our opponents around the world want to see."
Trudeau announced that Canada would impose 25% tariffs on C$155 billion (€102.1 billion) worth of U.S. goods.
Tariffs on C$30 billion (€19.8 billion) of imports will take effect on Tuesday, with the remainder rolling out over the next 21 days.
“Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn. Should the U.S. tariffs continue, we are actively discussing several non-tariff measures with provinces and territories,” Trudeau said.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also stated that Mexico would respond with retaliatory tariffs. She announced plans to reveal the targeted U.S. products on Sunday during a public event in Mexico City's central plaza.
Meanwhile, China signaled that it would impose additional tariffs of up to 15% on key U.S. agricultural products, including chicken, pork, soybeans, and beef. The country also plans to further restrict business with American companies, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
