The Commerce Department has initiated a probe into TP-Link, with concerns that the low-cost and widely used routers could provide a gateway for China-backed hackers to access U.S. infrastructure.
One possible outcome of the investigation is a ban on the sale of TP-Link routers in the U.S., according to two sources.
This is part of a broader set of measures by the Biden administration aimed at curbing China’s cyber operations targeting U.S. telecom networks.
Megan Cerullo of CBS News reported that last week, the Commerce Department issued a "preliminary finding" in a separate inquiry into China Telecom's U.S. subsidiary, citing risks associated with its equipment.
The move could lead to the removal of remaining China Telecom gear from U.S. networks.
