The probe follows reports of 20 crashes involving vehicles equipped with the updated Autopilot software installed as part of Tesla's recall in December.

This investigation adds to the regulatory scrutiny surrounding Tesla's Autopilot system, especially as CEO Elon Musk pushes for full self-driving capabilities.

The NHTSA expressed concerns about the crashes and preliminary test results of updated vehicles, prompting the agency to delve deeper into the adequacy of Tesla's recall measures.

Simultaneously, the NHTSA closed a three-year defect investigation into Autopilot, highlighting concerns about the system's weak driver engagement and its compatibility with Autopilot's operating capabilities, which could pose critical safety risks.
