Unity Software's decision to reduce its workforce was revealed in a recent regulatory filing, and internal company memo, according to Anna Tong's exclusive report for Reuters.
After the announcement, Unity shares experienced a nearly 5% increase in after-hours trading.
This layoff, the largest in the San Francisco-based company's history, is expected to be completed by the end of March.
Despite not being widely recognized outside the gaming industry, over 1.1 million game creators rely on Unity's software toolkit each month, including the creators of popular games like "Pokemon Go," "Beat Saber," and "Hearthstone."
These substantial job cuts will impact all teams, regions, and areas of the business, as communicated by the company to Reuters.
The layoffs follow an announcement by interim CEO Jim Whitehurst in November, describing a "company reset" aimed at focusing on the core business for long-term success and profitability.
